A few days ago – or was it weeks? – I can’t tell anymore – a reader mentioned to the effect that there is a fine line between pace in storytelling, suspense, and manipulation of the reader. This story, which hasn’t really moved one iota since November, seems headed toward manipulation. I say this because, having not moved the story since before Christmas, if we now head off into some flashback sequence, that will just put this story on hold for who knows how many months to come?
Remember, it took years to tell the story of Wally and Holly. And by the end of it, even Holly couldn’t survive! That is, she had to be written out of the story. And once she was written out, the story abruptly ended with no apparent wrap-up other than Wally and Kirbee walking off into the sunset.
I think maybe Walter got out of control, went on a rampage, and led people to a dead end that turned out to have elevators to Endtown conveniently waiting for them, as if they were expected.

I’ve always wanted to learn how Walter became the hero of Pep-Cola Stadium. Roll flashback.

@ Gary Wolner: The weird word balloons, I believe, are indications that he has just woken up and is still groggy.

To be fair, that sunset sequence may well be one of the best I have seen in this comic strip, having followed it now for a couple of years.

Apologies to Dragon Cat: I just now noticed that you answered Gary Wolner’s question about the word balloons and Walt being groggy.

Looks like being blind drunk was close enough to unconscious for Walt to morph into a bear instead of a monster.
