Doonesbury by Garry Trudeau for June 08, 2009

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: an artist doesn’t have to deal with a specific subject just because a vocal minority of his or her audience demands it. If you enjoy the work of an artist, you accept where the artist takes you with her or his work. If you don’t like the artist’s work, WHY ARE YOU HERE COMMENTING?

Repeat week, although I think the info on the menus should include saturated and trans fats, also sodium levels, for those of us that have to be careful what we put into our bodies.

It’s not true that Trudeau isn’t commenting on the president. There was a series just recently. However, he has always gone back and forth between political and just funny. Chill.

Gee1a, his last name is “Trudeau”, exactly the same as an erstwhile PM of Canada who “birded” the country (in 1982) while incumbent as PM (is he a distant relative?). Enough said!

cdward: It’s not true that Trudeau isn’t commenting on the president. There was a series just recently…

Actually, he was just playing with his being new in that series. The strip would have worked just as well with ANY new prez in the white house.

I’ve been reading Doonesbury for 39 years (really!) and he has never let a prez go 5 months without some serious criticism or ridicule. Until this time. Yawn.

Is Garry turning into just another hypocrite liberal? Has he always been one, and I just didn’t notice? Is he losing it? Is there another choice?

So many questions, so few answers.

There’s a reason many papers carry Doonesbury on the editorial pages. Trudeau does have a point of view and expresses it in his strip. That doesn’t mean he will never lampoon Obama, it just means he’ll do it when HE thinks it’s time.

You are thinking of the knee jerk supporters of the LAST administration who satisfy ALL 10 bullet points of Emilio Gentile’s organic definition of fascism.

Since Obama has NOT been in office 5 months yet, the record still stands.

You are just too impatient to start hating.

Oh my comments from the fundi wannabe Alliance Church loving Flames fan. Don’t read the damned strip and stick with mallard filmore if that’s the way you want it.

Nobody is going to stop you, we’re too busy watching the Red Wings cruise to another cup.

If you don’t like Mr. Trudeau’s work on President Obama thus far, you are entirely free to start your own cartoon and post it on YouTube or any of the other open-access sites. Or even start your own comic website… they all started from someone’s idea that they could do better.

Misterwhite, sadly you are right on the beam with your closing statement; ” You are just too impatient to start hating.” There is this extremely powerful wave of negativism and appetite for hating that has gripped our country and it is far more damaging than anything international.

It’s like the people complaining about Obama bringing his family with him to Europe. Because of how much it costs. There is a, Thankfully, Small % of people that will hate him no matter what he does. Nothing he does will ever be good or right in these waterheads eyes.

This Country needs a hate enema, We are rotting from the inside with hate. The leader of the GOP said “I want Obama to fail”. Not mention the “he’s the anti-christ” crowd.

Addition of calorie-count to a restaurant meal is one of the silliest ideas (but then, what else does one expect a bureaucrat to dream up) ever–since those who order those meals aren’t exactly looking for healthy foods.

JonD, you know, you’re correct. It started about 16 years ago. Especially the last 8. GWB had to put up with more hate than I’ve ever seen.

Maybe I misunderstood that strip about Obama having to have the Doonesbury structure explained to him, but what I got from it was that he was clueless about comic timing, the implication being that he probably can’t take a joke either. I think Trudeau is just warming up and we’ll see more about Obama in due course.

Humormehere, there are reasons Bush took it on the chops, but those have been enumerated so frequently by writers far better than me that anyone who thinks the complaints were unjustified is being deliberately obtuse.

And prasnivara, I actually do try to stick to reasonable food choices in a restaurant. It makes it a lot easier for me to do so if I can get some idea of what I’m ordering. It also reminds me that the margaritas and desserts really are a BAD idea.

Still Blueraven, it doesn’t negate that the calorie count is silly. Those who make sensible choices will anyway–as will those who don’t.

If the country needs a hate enema, as thepeoplemushroom says, I respectfully open the floor for suggestions as to where the squeeze bottle should be inserted…(I’m thinking somewhere down South maybe?)

Really prasrinivara? How about when the “sensible” salad turns out to have more fat than the steak? Most people don’t care about the nutritional information on products when the go grocery shopping; the info still has to be there. Restaurants should do the same thing for those who want the info.
