It was arranged that way to slow down typists to keep the type bars from jamming….

Which actually sped up the process. They did do it to prevent jamming, but not to slow it down, but to make it more efficient.

My Xperia Keyboard updated and it now has the numbers above the letters, I used to have to press the “123” button for the numbers to come up.
