We spent our summers working in the vegetable garden, canning or freezing produce, or doing housework. I got smart; if I offered to sit in the kitchen and watch the waterbath canner, I could read for 30 min at a time. Even the steamy kitchen was preferable to the hot sun.
Kids aren’t the only ones that get tired of summer repeats of every bad show ever made. Even cable reruns the same stuff interminably, summer or winter.
I went to zero cable channels, Overpriced Internet only, and ROKU. As an AT&T management retiree, I get a price brake, but my texts, slide rules, and Fourier analysis say NO WAY on landline bandwidth. And our DirecTV storm outages are legendary.
that was by design, networks would intentionally give reruns during the summer to encourage kids to go outside and play. Nickelodeon would even take one day out of the summer to stop giving any shows and just broadcast a message telling kids to go out and play for several hours.
When I was growing up (50’s and 60’s) we had three stations and no such thing as cable. All that was on were soaps and game shows. Then about 1959 the b&w tv caught fire in the Friday Night Fights (on the tv, not the parents) and we didn’t get another one for four years or more. But we had a field across the street. Wars were fought, distant lands explored and my younger brother ignored, if possible. A railroad tie bridge over the creek was the center of all the action and radio relay towers were gawked at through a telescope when men in climbing belts came to service them 250 ft. In the air. And Calvin’s school starts on Labor Day weekend like most North eastern schools and ends the last week of June. I don’t get where people say we teachers get three months off in the summer. July, August…one, two..

I don’t remember spending much time in front of the TV during the summer. There was too much to do outside.

Calvin could turn on his radio and listen to Mongo Jerry, that would cheer him up:

Leave it to Calvin to burst his own bubble.

Ironically, we’re into reruns . . repeats . . on the Calvin strip itself.

Finally!
That’s the reason why I don’t watch a lot of TV anymore. I’m on the internet about 90% of the time. Always something different.
