A certain percentage of jokes in this particular strip (higher than average, Iā€™m sure) require a nerd-pedigree. In the past, several went over my headā€¦ I got lucky this time out.

    OK, I googled ā€œCoralineā€ ā€¦ from Futabakenā€™s tipā€¦

cos Iā€™d never heard of it either.

    Ā

And as Alien says, she gets into a parallel worldā€¦.

If you donā€™t want too much explanationā€¦..

skip the rest of my commentā€¦..

Or if you want helpā€¦ or it might just be my take, read on!

    Ā

Actually she goes through a door, and finds an apartment occupied by people who more or less resemble the ones she knows in her familiar world.

At first better things seem to happen thereā€¦

but to stay, you need to accept shiny buttons being sewn over your eyesā€¦.. eeekā€¦.

    Ā

So my takeaway is that Jay is only getting a promotion and a raise cos he walked through such a door.

Heaven knows that the Rita in our world wouldnā€™t give him those things.

This was because Neil Gaiman said hi to our message board. But people should check out Coraline.

Iā€™ve seen Coraline ā€“ but I like Neil Gaimanā€™s ā€œThe Graveyard Bookā€ much better. By the way, Gaiman is teaching at a little college just up the road from our home in New York state.

the movie is great and the other movies from ā€˜Laikaā€™ are also great (Paranorman is one of my favorites). And if you like that style, you may also like ā€˜Dragon huntersā€™

He collaborated with Sir Terry Pratchett on one of my favorite books, Good Omens: the Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch.

Going over this cartoon, thinking about it, I thought of that little girl in ā€™Mariaā€™s Dayā€™ who has such big blue eyes that I wonder if she has cataracts.
