“I’ll get it later”? Aside from being an obvious setup for the punchline, what in the world does that mean? There is no getting later with a phone call. It’s not like the telephone is a sandwich that he can pick up later. The appropriate polite response is, “Would you ask them to give you their name and number so I can call them back later.” Other possibilities that are less polite, but more reasonable are, “Who’s calling?” or “Tell them I’m not here” or “If it’s Gordon/Lawrence, tell them I’ll call back”
With modern technology of smartphones, parents today are less inclined to know who or what their children are doing. The landline phone conversations could be overheard, keeping the parents in the loop with their children’s world.
In the original run, Michael had been calling his sister “Lizard breath” for several years. It isn’t being done this run. Today’s episode reminded me of one in the original run where Liz answered the phone, it was Michael’s girl friend, and …
I don’t remember Mike calling Liz, “Lizard Breath.” I believe the only one (or, at least the first one) to call her that was April, who is not on the scene yet.
You can’t get a call later & just leave the person hanging on the line indefinitely. That makes no sense. He could have said, “Take a message” or “Tell them I’ll call them back later.”

What if Michael’s grandmother is calling? In that case, he should be grateful.

Liz is very astute for her age, noticing that a girl is more important to her brother. My youngest is the same.
