In the early days of film, a film required the leading man and woman to have a closing scene together as the sun rose behind them. But the producer wasn’t willing to pay to send the company to the East coast and had them just film the couple together gazing out at the west coast sunset and print the film in reverse. Worked like a charm, until the test audience noticed that the waves were going out, and the birds were flying backward.
Reminds me of a roommate who didn’t bring a coat for her freshman year at college “in the South.” She was from Long Island NY. The school was in Baltimore MD.
Or the grad student at the same school who thought Virginia and West Virginia were regions of the same state. And, finally, there was a man I met while working: a wealthy business executive from New England who retired to the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. He was dismayed, he told me, by all the Civil War re-enactments. “Why do they make such a big deal around here,” he asked, “about some little rebellion from a century ago?”
Note to this doofus kid: Whether the ocean is on the left or the right depends on the which coast you are on, AND whether you are facing North or facing South. Duuhhhh!!

The only time I could figure out directions was when we lived in San Diego – I knew the ocean was to the west.
