History lesson: In the 1950’s IBM had a famous and much parodied ad campaign based on the slogan “THINK”. As best as I recall, it would have been about 1957 I saw a copy of “Mad” (then newly converted from comic book to magazine format) which reprinted some cartoons from the “Harvard Lampoon”, one of which was this very joke. This will be on the midterm. Class dismissed.
Too true, folks. I remember when “thimk” came out and became very common (at least in the northeast). Even back in the 50s, thinking was becoming a joke. The commontater/author Jean Shepherd noted that it was rather sad indication of the American mind.

I remember too in late 50’s… Mad mag also printed PLAN AHEad with last letters pushed together on the sign.
All said and done THIMK may have conveyed the message better than THINK

Why are the signs always “Thimk?” Why can’t they go the other way and be “Thiok?”

Well, there are some folks who were actually born yesterday. Besides, I don’t think jokes have statutes of limitations or pull dates.

The M is silent. It’s pronounced Thick. As in Hey, Boss. You’re thick.
