a lot of teachers do this.

which is really stupid, coz the public schools are supposed to be buying all that stuff out of tax dollars.

makes you wonder what really happens to our tax dollars.

School Districts are supposed to provide a space for a child to sit and work, a teacher and books. Now, in the State of Florida, the Legislature has not only mandated that many of our tax dollars must be surrendered from School Districts to privately run ’charter’s schools (where students are not subjected to the constant testing that is alleged to weed out the incompetent teachers), but that parents can register their kids in schools in another county from where they live if they feel the schools near them are not good. As a result, school districts have no idea how much money they will actually have in a given year, or how many kids they have to find space for. It’s a wonder that anyone gets an education with all the hate that state legislatures are directing to public schools.

The bright-eyed enthusiasm of new teachers. Unfortunately, it does not take long for reality to kick their teeth in, when they find out that they cannot change the world, like they planned after they had finished their practicum teaching. That, along with school districts not hiring, killed MY teaching career.

If we took all the $$$ that teachers spend on supplies, we could lower the national debt by 50%.

A teacher can’t buy all that on a teacher’s salary. Trust me, I used to be a teacher.

When I was a kid, we were required to have pens/pencils, pouch for said pens/pencils, geometry set, paper, folders. 3rings binders were not required at that time. My mother used to get a ton of peechee folders for about 15cents at Kmart. She would buy enough to last 2 years, if need be. I would have one for each subject. Everyone else had the more fancy folders that cost more. Even as a kid, I knew the cost of things and if I really wanted something, I would save for it out of my allowance and buy it myself. Taught me a lot that I use today as an adult.

And the Teachers Union bitches about poor wages. Take some of the exorbitant union check off fees and buy the stuff themselves.

Teachers don’t do that. They send home a letter listing what kids need to bring.

Teachers have to buy supplies out of pocket because most taxpayers refuse to look beyond the end of their noses. When you cut funding to the bone then start in on the organs you can’t complain about where your tax dollars are going. Charter schools waste your money.

Hey, school funds go to the bureaucrat’s assistances, assistances assistants. Most of the funding for education goes for administrative costs.

My better half is a retired teacher who taught in mostly poor rural schools, and she spent a lot of personal money to make sure the students had what was necessary for a quality education. My part was to occasionally refurbish a computer for an individual student to have so they could do work at home. No for us education was not inexpensive.

My wife and I were both teachers in not so affluent communities…we bought supplies (and snacks) on a regular basis and were often surprised at tax time to see the total. I agree with the comment that said teacher haters are out in force.

In my area, teachers get money from the PTA to assist with buying classroom supplies. Teachers will make certain the students have what they need. Direct families to social service. My community does a school supply drive so schools have supplies to give kids who need it. Spending “tax payer” money on school supplies is an investment in Americ’as future. Thank you to every teacher who has gone above and beyond for their students.

What so many “taxpayers” don’t seem to get is that good schools = higher property values + less crime.

I watched my hometown go from a public HS school that won the Presidential Excellence in Education Award and constantly high property values in town to the DOJ getting involved in discipline issues at the school and now the folks wanting to leave for the county to escape the incessant robberies and gang shootings can’t sell their houses to save their lives.

I don’t know about all the previous comments but as for the strip she gave them school supplies because she wanted to not “had” to. Although I am surprised the kids didn’t bring their own supplies since their parents presumably wouldn’t have known the teacher was going to do this(could be wrong but it would be hard to keep it secret from the kids)

Some may say that it’s unrealistic, but I think it’s nice. Especially since it’s likely that a few of the children in that classroom cannot afford good supplies.
