I’ve been wondering if they might try to airbrush Washington, Jefferson and the other founding fathers out of history because they were slave owners, but, history is history isn’t it?
I know it’s all about fundraising, but it’s odd that Washington has a memorial to James Buchanan (“The incorruptible statesman whose walk was upon the mountain ranges of the law”) but we have none for the Colossus of Independence.
To quote Washington from above; “Where’s the line? Where does it end?” Maybe it ends at statues of people who DIDN’T HEAD AN ILLEGAL REBELLION AGAINST THE U.S. GOVERNMENT! You know, the one Lee, Stonewall Jackson, and the others headed??
Many of our Founding Fathers were slave owners, but they saw the evil of their ways. Washington, Jefferson, and Patrick Henry all freed their slaves in their wills. They did NOT lead a rebellion to keep slaves.
Slaves were valuable property. how many of us would consider giving up our homes, our cars, etc. right now? But most of us have wills that state property is to be disposed of upon our own death.
By the way, I should have put this comic in its proper context considering I shouldn’t assume everyone is glued to the news all day.
This comic is a direct response to Trump’s meltdown press conference where he tried to share the blame of Charlottesville on the anti-fascist and counter protestors. To make matters worse, he started to go down the rabbit hole by name checking George Washington and Thomas Jefferson as other slaveholders who might also have their statues torn down on that always bizarre “slippery slope where’s-the-line” logic.
When does neo-Nazi and white supremacist become homegrown terrorism to be spoken of as freedom of speech in the same breath with the freedoms that my father fought for in World War II against Hitler and Mussolini in Europe. These people don’t give a fig about their statues as much as they care about their “white supremacist Pride”. The statues are only an excuse. If they really believed that they were proud and white they would get off their pink butts and do some good in the world rather than destroy everything. They could do Work as volunteers in charities. Show some gumption and take on tasks for their churches instead of destroying their own neighborhoods.

It reminds me of the Ray Bradbury book “Fahrenheit 451” in which all books were burned because they offended various people.

Maybe it is time for an Adams Memorial? Not a bad idea.
