Why would you want pants that looked like the flooring in the first operatory? Let’s imagine the reasons:

    1. Camouflage. If the patient gets really angry as the dentist botches the dental surgery and comes after the dentist, he can throw himself on the flooring and the patient won’t be able to spot him. “Where did that blasted dentist go? He was just here! When I get my hands on him…"

    2. Dental fashion sense. “I just love a dentist who is colour-coordinated. That Dr. Patterson’s clothing even matches the colour of his office. He is that good.”

    3. Operatory Ownership. Just in case there is jealousy between the dental assistants working in different operatories. “You always come dressed like the flooring in her operatory, Dr. Patterson, and never like the flooring in mine. What have I done to displease you? Will we ever be happy doing dental work again?”

    4. Practicality. “John wanted to get a clinic gown in every colour under the rainbow, but I convinced him to get only clinic gowns that matched his operatory flooring. So now he has one in brown, one in gray, and one in dirty white covered in bits of drilled off tooth enamel.”

    5. Humour. The author is letting us readers know that even though Elly is schooling John on what to wear, she is not exactly an expert on fashion herself. To me that is the best reason.

Are we sure dentists (or any medical personnel) should be wearing neckties? There’s a retired doctor in my congregation who wears bow ties. I think ‘twas for prevent from the thing from touching a wound (in dentists’ cases, from getting slobbered).

Neck ties look fine in the office. But oral surgery? Better tuck that away.

Ell reminds me of my late mother who could be that way with me. I just didn’t have the heart to stop her.

Ellie should buy some Barbie & Ken dolls she can dress up and stop bugging her husband.

I never understood why women want to dress their men. And why men let them. Many of us can barely dress ourselves.

I think John looks pretty good. And, for the record, if we are going somewhere special, I put out my husband’s clothes, because he would live in track pants if I let him (especially his favourites, the paint-spattered ones)

I have to admit that the clothes Elly chose look better than what he started with originally (they don’t match!) and the red one. But choosing clothing to match a floor? That’s going a bit far.

Elly would not still be in bed when John was dressing for work. She was not lazy. She would have been getting the kids ready for school and making breakfast. She was usually up before John.
