It’s interesting that Lizzie asks for her mother to braid her hair. As we know, Lynn Johnston has told us in her notes on several occasions that she dreamed of braiding her own daughter’s hair, something that her daughter Kate hated with a passion and refused to do. For Lizzie to ask for this thing which Lynn desperately wanted to do with her own daughter tells us that Elly’s illness has an added dimension of torture to it, because it is at this moment when Elly is sick that Lizzie asks to do something that Elly/Lynn really wants to do.

Kids, let Mom go back to bed so she doesn’t breathe germs all over you and make you miss school. As much as you may actually like that idea…..

I immediately start taking Zicam, my last cold lasted 4 days.

Unless it’s recovery from major surgery (and even then), moms aren’t allowed to take sick days.

Tell them not today for any of that. Michael is old enough to make sandwiches for himself and Lizzy. The rest can wait.

Just go back to bed.

Parents don’t get days off. The only time I was out of action (including when I had a broken ankle) was with the flu in 2000. I sat unconscious for three or four days in a chair in the living room, wearing a heavy coat and not even going to the bathroom. My wife kept a glass of water beside me and when I came around a bit I took a drink and drifted off again. It permanently changed the way artichokes and cilantro tasted – now I love artichokes and can’t abide cilantro at all. I never noticed it before. When it started I called in sick to work and told my boss to let Trula (our admin) know I was going to be out sick. He laughed and said, “Okay, but she’s been retired for 20 years!” The boss said that when his hit he was seriously telling his wife what to do if he died.

No, he can’t come over unless he wants my cold. No, I am not going anywhere. You can tie you shoes, right? Fix your hair. You need the practice. There is “Duck” for lunch; Duck in, duck out, do it yourself. Cookies? WHat’s this “we” stuff? You got a mouse in your pocket?

Immediately collapse.

You’re standing up and your a mom.

See, this is why it really pays to get out of bed.

Mom’s can never take a sick day. But where the hell is John anyway?
