    Sam Rayburn’s house was originally a stacked 4×4: four rooms on the ground level and four rooms above, enlarged as finances permitted. Although Speaker of the House over twice as long as anyone else, it isn’t ornate even now; the last Speaker not to leave as a millionaire (or worse). It is amusing to listen to visitors; the most common comment is “My grandmother had one of those.” Truly a man of the people.
