As the mower obviously wasn’t part of the robot Dad should just go to the school and demand his property back. No adult can tell he did believe the kid was authorized to sell it.
If they have an old fashioned push-mower, he can mow the lawn with that instead, using probably double the amount of time & energy he would have used with the power mower.
