When I got to the kitchen, cleaned and dressed with no great hurry or attention to detail, my lunch was already on the counter. Mom was gone somewhere, which was completely normal. I toasted some frozen waffles and spackled them with peanut butter for breakfast. My books and homework were packed and ready to go. It all seemed distant and unimportant. But the only way forward was forward. I moved along on the path of habitual motion.
