So much has been made of how much thought Ernie put into every nuance of the strip that it’s difficult to not see this entire comic as secretly filthy! There’s no other explanation for the position of the characters in the first two panels. Also, we know from other cartoon efforts by Ernie that he wasn’t above getting down in the dirt on occasion.
