Do onto others as you would have done onto you (a major theme running thru all major religions) is being ignored, mostly by the elected leaders and the donor class that’s killing us all.
They now call manners “political correctness,” and mock it. And claim that rudeness is a virtue. And – bizarrely – claim that rudeness is a “traditional family value.” Of which Jesus would approve.
Training in “manners” or as it was called in older times training “Gentlemen and Ladies”, has only served to put an mask of civility on the depraved, while the already civilized didn’t really need it.
When you intend to stab someone in the back, knowing which fork to use…
..doesn’t really help the situation much.
.
But teaching children empathy, that has a better chance of working.
“Contrary to popular belief, most people do care about the welfare of others.
From an evolutionary standpoint, empathy is a valuable impulse that helps humans survive in groups. In American schools, this impulse has been lying dormant from a lack of focus. But in Denmark, a nation that has consistently been voted the happiest place in the world since Richard Nixon was president, children are taught about empathy from a young age both inside and outside of school."
(But of course, this is something that foreigners do, so it doesn’t really have a chance here.)
Now days manners is confused with diplomacy, which is defined as saying “Nice Doggie” while looking for a BIG ROCK! Manners is more telling someone to go to H E double toothpicks, while making them look forward to the trip.
Speaking of manners, I wanted to take a moment and thank all of you for commenting. If you didn’t already know we use a lot of your comments on The Prickly City Podcast, (you can see a link on this page). Thank you again!
Let’s keep the political cat fighting out of this. The strip has a point and makes it. I come here to momentarily get away from the perpetual toxicity in the Real World.

Republican lies are exempt from that manners stuff though, right?
Stuff like OBAMA IS COMING TO TAKE YOUR GUNS!
And Obama was born in Kenya.
And Obama death panels.
And Mexico will pay for it.
And I have no business interests in Russia.
And there was no Russian interference in our elections.

people’s demand for manners seems to be tied to the political party they are demanding them from.

Maybe once the Führer shuts down the Internet, manner will start to improve again…..
