After he finally came up with the perfect sound, he forgot it before he wrote it down. When his assistant reminded what it was, he said, “Oh yeah. That does ring a bell.”

Something called “ding dong dash” has recently gotten popular in local neighborhoods, thankfully not mine. I’ve heard it described as kids being kids and harmless fun. I think not.

We don’t have a doorbell out here in the boonies. But we do have several dog bells to alert us.

Did he consider “sham-a-lam-a-ding-dong”?

I was surprised to hear in a 1950s radio program “Fibber McGee and Molly” that Fibber had invented personalized ring-tones for his front door bell. It played different tunes depending on who pushed the button. He was so ahead of his time.

I like ding-a ling.
