Learning to drive a car with standard transmission [or stick shift as we called it]… when very few cars had automatic transmissions… was quite a challenge and pretty much overwhelming until you got the hang of it. The trick was letting out on the clutch and simultaneously advancing the accelerator while watching for traffic… ahead and behind [be sure to adjust the rear view mirror]… and steering to keep the car in the correct lane and avoid hitting anything. Quite a workload to be sure. Mastering the shifting pattern added to the difficulty because we had to repeat the process for each gear.
The Holy Grail of transmissions back then was the floor shift or ‘four on the floor’ if we were among the lucky few to have a muscle car. Good memories!

Those famous words for everyone who learned to drive a standard transmission: now ease out on the clutch.
I got a new (used) car last October and it’s an automatic. SOB!!

I miss having a manual transmission. I will have one in the last car I drive.
