No living thing has a complete off switch food wise because food is why they live, other than reproduction. Food they have to spend all day hunting for if their supper. So the dog will eat and eat till he can’t eat anymore.
I think it is more the smell they are attracted to than the food. I’ve seen dogs tear apart garbage bags they sniff at and get to the trash. They sniff around, nose-move things and give them a few licks and leave. They know when food is bad. It seems they can’t resist the odor of food but do not necessarily eat spoiled food. If Farley did eat spoiled food, then he is truly domesticated. He has no instinct for these things. So, that would nullify John’s theory.
Why don’t they just put the garbage in the can? Or do they have only one can and a lot of garbage. Elly fills the bag w with leftover food and expects the dog to stay out of it?
We can’t put our garbage out early because of all the wild animals that would get into it. Chances are the garbage would even cause some to get run over in the process. Lucky for us, garbage is picked up at 2 minutes to 7:00 in the morning.
Our dog would sometimes get into our garbage can. The can had a movable lid. We rigged up a mousetrap so that it would snap when the lid was moved. Gave a demonstration to the dog. She saw the thing snap and make a noise. Didn’t try to move the lid again.

If there is no squirrel around, go for the garbage bag.

No Dumbass it’s due to the cheap moron owners that haven’t bought trash cans.

Maybe it’s the fact that you dump the garbage down right under his nose and leave it in such an easy to open package.
