Some housewife in an icy environment devised a cool way to get hubby to clear the walks. Probably added the promise of lots of hot toddy and food to keep the job from lasting all day.
Looks like Mr. Mallett is highlighting Canada as a power house in hockey (iihf 2018 U20 champions) and curling (current world champions men/women), noticed the maple leaf on Frazzās tee. If it was not intended, then I have a vivid imagination. Go Canada goā¦ :)
In my mind, itās all contrived unless youāre racing. Nothing is purer than āLetās see who gets there first.ā And then we find myriad ways to suck the purity right out of that. And as just one example, Iām looking straight at my beloved triathlon. Letās see who gets there first three different ways, and letās make one of those ways where itās legal, if the water is cold enough, to pull on a performance-enhancing suit that turns you into a human buoy, and another of those ways actually defined by use of the most efficient performance-enhancing mechanical human-powered device our species has come up with so far.
So Iām absolutely fine with curling, and Iām also fine with not taking curling very seriously, because thatās the other thing about sports: If you have to take it seriously, then itās over. Not if you DO take it seriously. Just if you HAVE to. So Iām not picking on curling at all. I could even be exalting it.

For the record here, I want to say that Iām not making fun of curling. Iām making fun of the PEOPLE who make fun of curling. The clichĆ©. Because when you get right down to it, okay, yes, itās silly and contrived, but how much more contrived is it than, say, the very well-accepted-as-a-serious-sport basketball? How much essential difference is there between sliding a rock toward a target on the ice, and throwing a ball through a hoop on a pole? Oh, right, the brooms. Like the dribbling.
