If I’m not mistaken that’s the first time a dog has appeared in DOONESBURY.

Zonker and his dad were busted by a French-speaking dog, so whistling isn’t much of a stretch …

now if them doggies could just carry a little keg of DDT fastened at their necks as with bernards and whiskey. since bedbugs is the most terriblest scourge ever to whip mankind, ain’t nothin’ wrong with deploying the good bad stuff. (the dogs are impressive, aren’t they? in the distant future we’ll be able to use their gifts to genetically re-engineer our own noses. of course, there could be some awkward new social developments accompanying that - sniff, sniff.)

Looks like a GBT version of a Hanna Barbera cartoon dog. Let’s see if he floats through the air in ecstasy when they reward him with a doggie treat. Or if he snickers.

Is a whistling dog any more unusual than talking bedbugs?

Suddenly I’m reminded, though not well enough, of the parody comic strips in Dick Tracy in the late 60’s: “Sawdust” and “The Invisible Tribe,” both of which were just dialogue strips, one spoken by an unchanging pile of dots, the other by, of course, invisible people in a blank panel. Maybe GBT is angling for an old-fashioned topper strip?

It was on a road trip to discover America when the dog said, “J’acuse!”. The cop found two seeds and declared them dealers. I think that was the series where Joanie first appeared.. but wasn’t it Mark, not Mike’s dad?

How can anyone forget Rosebud the bassett Hound? Or am I the only one old enough to remember her?

Are there really bedbug sniffing dogs you can call in for help?

What about cats? Does anybody remember any? I can’t bring them to mind.

Why shouldn’t bugs be able to talk? Zonker has frequently conversed with flowers.

I think Rosebud was in Bloom County, not in Doonesbury, and she/he was a combination of basset hound and antelope (a bassalope?).

There are dogs that can sniff out bedbugs, termites, mold in walls, explosive, cadavers buried in the ground and rubble etc. It is pretty much amazing what dogs can sniff out.

the comments posted are as funny as the strip sometimes. I am a 72 years young great grandma and have enjoyed doonesbury for many years. seems like a parallel of my family.

Cats? There was a Bloom County episode where “Beacon” features editor Opus presented a sample of the comic “Those Darned Cats” featuring Doonesbury lookalike kitties! (He also showed a clip of a historical cartoon about president Garfield!)
