My older brother went through a magic phase when he was about 11. One of our older brothers made a movie (8mm, silent) of him doing magic and me as his assistant. At the end I “rebelled” by (fake) kicking him on the shin. He turned to cast a spell on me, but I held up a mirror…the next shot was of my baby brother (age not-quite-1) sitting on the ground with my older brother’s shirt on. High-tech special effects for the day (1973). What was really cool was that there was a flash of light when the spell was cast!
There was a kid in my grade school class that did magic tricks. He had one of those finger “guillotines” too. For a while I was hesitant to put my finger in it, but so many other kids did it and their fingers stayed in one piece, so I finally did it. One little girl just wouldn’t do it, though. Of course that thing only works if the blade is smacked down quickly. If it’s pushed down slowly, then it hurts. Might even actually lose the finger!

Before that last panel I thought he meant Magic: The Gathering.

I got a chemistry set when I was about 10 or 11, and much to my disappointment it did not have the ingredients for pyrotechnics.
