Coming Soon đ At the beginning of April, youâll be
introduced to a brand-new GoComics! See more information here. Subscribers, check your
email for more details.
Ok, it seems our friend LeadingEdge has been banished by the GoComics deep state. Hopefully, they will see the error of their ways and allow LE to rejoin our community.
I remember getting a ton of kits for WWII airplanes and warships. My attempts usually ended up like Calâs and I had to have Mom help me finish. I did learn the difference between a Stuka and a Spitfire.
I love modern instruction books 20 pages of warnings and maybe a sentence or two on directions. Or they are written by Chinese with high school English and make no sense.
Oh, man, Iâd forgotten the childhood feeling of getting model glue on my fingers. âLike mozzarella cheeseâ indeed. And it would dry into a crust that wouldnât wash off and stayed on your fingers for days. Kids today donât know what theyâre missing. Do they even still sell plastic models that people put together and paint as a hobby? I used to build dinosaurs and Star Trek space ships.
Revell was always very good at clearly marking their models with an age minimum to stop this kinda problem. Never saw a model for any kid under 9 unless it was a âsnap togetherâ model. .
A great advancement in model kit building was Testorâs introduction of liquid cement.Until you spilled the bottle.Actually, I had a lot more trouble with the decals than the cement.
I remember my friend some years back who bought a bicycle made in China. On the outside of the container, these words of wisdom proclaimed: PLEASE ASSEMBLE BICYCLE BEFORE RIDING.
This really is one of the more beautiful interpretations of their youthful innocenceâthinking that the three languages are sequential portions of instruction and not just the same thing. Really one of my favorite CH strips, though there are many.

Well Calvin, maybe if you learned those 3 languages you would understand! Easy!

Is Hobbes sure theyâre not just the same instructions in different languages? Thatâs how most instruction manuals work, as far as I know.

Should have asked your parents, Calvin.

Calvin, my boy. Not only does mom know the newspaper is not going anywhere, she wants it that way. Thatâs why itâs there.

The worst was getting glue on the fuselage. Never came off and ruined the model!

Calvinâs last line in this strip is one of the most all-time memorable from C&H for me.

As a kid, I didnât realize that the parts in other languages were just translations of the same instructions.
