Actually a very good point. There was an earlier film done in 1980 on the same exact theme and even the guy in the costume was the same as in Predator 7 years later.
There is a point in the movie, where Ah-nold is fighting It and Elpidia Carillo picks up a gun and he takes from her immediately. She asks why and he says it’s because It won’t kill her while she’s unarmed. She questions this, and he replies “because there’s no sport in it.”
The hunters and fishers I know tend to eat what they kill (sharing it with others so friends and neighbors benefit) as well as contribute to the habitats of the prey animals, so they’re also environmentalists. Hunters are not evil and “Predator” is a classic 1980s action film.
If ‘Predator’ was instead called ‘Trophy Hunter’ though, viewers would still be confused. There’d be some who would keep waiting for that scene where some young bimbo would exclusively target some very wealthy, elderly man.
The predator was the antagonist of the movie, yes – but that doesn´t make it a villain. It followed its nature, similar to man, and hunted the prey that gave most resistance for it to prove its worth.
Hunting for a trophy is a poor reason to hunt. Only man hunts for trophies. Nature’s predators hunt for food and don’t care about the size of the prey or its accoutrements.
My uncle went trophy hunting in Africa a few years ago. Before the hunting lodge was built, the local villagers shot animals for food, money, and to protect their crops and themselves. Now, hunters pay a hefty fee that varies for each type of animal they shoot. Some people come just for photography. The villagers have jobs as drivers, guides and in the lodge. The hunters can ship home heads, pelts, etc. for mounting, but all meat goes to the village. Everybody now has a good reason to protect the environment, keep the herds in balance, and watch for poachers. Even the Nature Conservancy embraces the fact that they can’t protect an ecosystem unless it benefits the local population.
I think the name of the movie was appropriate. Also, I don’t think the alien was evil or anything else. He was just a hunter and they were prey. He accepted that as a hunter, sometimes the hunter becomes prey. Nope, I don’t see the alien as evil at all, maybe not a good enough hunter and he should have taken more humans, I doubt that anyone would have placed a limit on how many human he could take, not with how many are on the face of the earth.
Oof. Wiley you are trying to hard. Movie title was fine then. Now that you sensitive little lefties have thought you are in control it seems so offensive. But most of us normal “fly over nobody’s to you “ don’t see your point. Lol @ you.
That makes Wiley a trophy hunter instead of a cartoonist, because he is hunting for empty skulls that don’t understand conservation funding and wildlife management in practice. That’s particularly true in Africa, where trophy hunting is a major source of funding to combat poachers and restore habitat. But you don’t expect an empty skull to understand that. Wait – does that make Wiley a trophy, as well as a hunter of empty skulls? Woo – pot AND kettle!
He’s only skirting the edge of an anti hunting for trophies rant, hunting for meat, fur and other animal products is not what a trophy hunter do, a trophy hunter is the unique awfulness of killing for sport and bragging rights, as opposed to hunting and eating your prey, where even if you see it as a sport, you are just replacing farm raised meat with meat you hunted.

Eh, you’re not wrong… then again, would that make housecats trophy hunters, too?

Paulie is indeed a predator, by nature.

The other point in that movie was that he (it?) only hunted people who were armed, too. And he let pregnant females live. Fair fight? Maybe …

And then there is the “Alien”. If you are light years away from Earth, who is the alien?

Here’s another dumb movie topic:
The aliens were predators. So, shouldn’t the movie Alien vs Predator been about the aliens fighting themselves?

By the way: if a trophy is your prime motive, you are NOT a hunter, you are a trophy KILLER; a waste of skin.

Good point in the comic today! I’ll feel better as I’m being digested knowing it’s official label was a predator rather than a trophy hunter!
