I’ve seen animals caught up in those things. That’s why I ALWAYS cut open every circle before throwing them into the RECYCLE. Even there, I worry that the thing just might find its way out and harming some animal. Have any of you read about the new invention that makes those holders out of some type of animal food?
I’ll be the one to point out that they’re still a problem. In the ocean, they break down into small particles that screw up the digestive system when swallowed by fish.
Thanks chip these things have created horrors. So have balloons, fire lanterns and the other plastic junk out there. BTW, those balloons do not biodegrade despite what they advertise.
My wife is so mindful of stuff like this. Just this morning she asked me to get her some orange juice. I needed to open another carton. She told me to cut the pull tab after removing it from inside the cap. I honestly would not have thought of doing that.
I wasn’t aware of the danger of those six pack holders, but I am aware of the dangers of plastic bags. Many turtles and other sea animals mistake them for jelly fish, with debilitating and even fatal results. I hope Mr. Dunham can say something about that in a future strip.
Even the larger plastic “collars” are a nightmare. I cut all the loops and cut the pieces into smaller pieces, figuring that if they’re swallowed they’ll be easier to pass. I hope.
Indeed … a helpful announcement. I always cut up the rings that keep drinks together before I toss them, and I try to be environmentally-wise whenever possible.
Thanks to all the thoughtful replies today. If more people would DO things like this, it surely would help! I hope science can come up with better ideas for all of us to avoid such situations as this horrid plastic causes.

I used to cut those things up, but then I quit buying them, and saved myself a lot of work.
