    April 1, 1918 was also the day when the Royal Army Air Corps became the Royal Air Force. Given the way things were for pilots in World War I, the date was not inappropriate.

    April Fool’s Day started when the Julian calendar was switched to the Gregorian calendar. The Julian calendar celebrated New Years around the Spring Equinox on April 1st. Those who still celebrated New Years the same as before were called April Fools.
