    I do believe things will work out. Perhaps not very well for us, but they will work out.

    Clark Kent, MatureCanadian – I can speak only for myself, of course, but I’m thankful for every day that I wake up, and can see the sunlight and feel the wind. All we can really do is live in the day we’re in, and take comfort in the thousand little pleasures it brings…yes, every day has them, when we stop feeling sorry for ourselves long enough to notice. Nearly all of our panic and rage is over things that we have no control over, and which will unfold in the same way whether we’re here or not, so all we’re doing is losing what enjoyment there is in what we have, and in what we can control.

    If we appreciate simply being alive and make the best of the day – making it lighter for each other rather than heavier – we can close our eyes at the end of it and be thankful. And mean it.

    (Yes, I’m talking to myself as much as to anyone else. It’s how I get through the dark days; those happen too.)

    “Calm down. Things will work out.” There’s wisdom there.

    from a 4% increase in maximum tax, to the shelf life of beer, the society of “instant communication” has so little of consequence, and so much to fear.

    Ironic timing, given “Earth 2100” was on History Channel just last night. I couldn’t imagine a more alarmist show if I cared to. Yes, there are things we need to change or we’re in deep doodoo. But I wouldn’t bet it’s half as bad as what the Chicken Littles and sheeple who listen to them think it is. The oil-based economy problems, yes. “THE WORLD IS COMING TO AN END!” rhetoric? Wake me when you have hard, empirical evidence and not just theories and projections.

    If you can keep your head when all about you Are losing theirs and blaming it on you, If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you, But make allowance for their doubting too;

    If you can dream - and not make dreams your master; If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim; If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster And treat those two impostors just the same;

    If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools, Or watch the things you gave your life to broken, And stoop and build ‘em up with wornout tools:

    If you can fill the unforgiving minute With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run - Stay off the Internet and all that’s in it, You’ll make a boring commentator, son!

    Trends tend not to continue indefinitely–and so extrapolation of any trend far enough out will lead to catastrophe.

    And, as has been pointed out, media will always go for the drama–Catastrophe sells papers (or used to); calm, reasoned discussion does not.

    And then there’s that old saying:

    “If you can stay calm, while all around you is chaos… then you probably haven’t completely understood the seriousness of the situation.”

    I emailed my Senators and Congressman yesterday with the idea that since govmt wants to do social engineering with taxes- that all fresh fruit and veg, purified water, unsweetened cereal nuts and grain etc should be exempt from tax. I will not hold my breath waiting for even so much as a meaningful response however. Many on my Facebook are very positive about it;-)

    Night-Gaunt49 said: “Like the idea that the climate is either not changing or it is strictly natural.”

    While I don’t disagree that global climate change is happening, I do refute the idea that humans have anything to do with it. The vast majority of environmentalists agree that human efforts haven’t had much of an impact either way. Climate change has been proven to be a natural cycle of the Earth through geological records. But do they get their voices heard? No. Reason and logic don’t sell; hype and panic do.

    But if sheeple panicking gets us to start using alternate fuels and cheaper, renewable energy, who cares? If we do rape and pillage the planet until we’re back in the Stone Age, who cares? The Earth will recover and that’s the only side I care about. Mother has survived earthquakes, massive volcanic eruptions, meteor strikes, and five mass extinctions. She’ll adapt, she’ll heal, and she’ll survive long after we’re gone. In the meantime, if all this hysteria gets it so I can drive without paying $3.60+ for a measure of fuel or can live in a world without choking on smog when an inversion hits, then by all means do whatever you like.
