This is what happens when you send a dog to do a cat’s job.
For me, licking a paw didn’t suggest a loss of mission. Perhaps if “Lassie” had picked up a stick and run back to the well/mine with it …
Lassie did her job just fine. She left a ‘message’ on the tree.
