I get the feeling that Topper intends to leave his man Friday behind. Will the ‘bootlick manners’ come off to reveal an industrial size can of whoopass !?
It wasn’t easy, I’m tired and should go to sleep, but I just have to read today’s exciting, spellbinding installment of “The Perils of Tracy”. Let’s see,
No, Topper, “ShiyakI” won’t be worrying about your “health” while you and the “boys” are out. He knows between the Hornet (and Red Wasp,) plus Tracy and his squad, Topper will be well taken care of. But, just in case Topper does make it back, “Shiyaki” will be packing like an industrious valet, while in between the packing, he will be looking for information that the Hornet can use on Topper.
@BILLJACKSON1: from yesterday night:You said Pat was the senior partner in the Tracy/Pat relationship. i respectfully disagree. When they were both in plainclothes, the relationship was never depicted that way. See my comment below on this subject:
I understand that Pat was once Dick Tracy’s partner, like Sam is now. Does this new information fit his established history? No, not really. In the very beginning, Pat was very young. He appeared to have much less experience than Tracy. He did dumb things like putting his eye to a keyhole, where he almost got his head shot off by Big Boy. for example. Gould used his character as Tracy’s foil, so that Tracy would have someone to explain all his scientific detecting to. Later, he became much more competent. When Gould decided to introduce Sam, he (Gould) modernized the whole strip, making Tracy and Sam almost equal partners, with both of them having keen detecting skills. And Pat, who was promoted to Chief, seemed to age a bit overnight. But by that time, almost 20 years of strip history had passed, so it is questionable how many readers noticed, until all the reprint comic books showcasing the older material came out. Gould did not pay too much attention to how promotions from uniform to plainclothes happen in the real world. Tracy seemed to join the plainclothes squad, and become the main detective therein, right off of the street, with Chief Brandon’s blessing. Mike and Joe had a retcon story a few years back where they tried to show that Tracy could have been a uniformed cop first. So I guess Pat could have been a cop in another city, but we’ll have to forget much of his comic relief bungling from the first several years. That’s o. k. – backstory has always been fairly loose in this strip.
Topper in his fancy fur-trimmed overcoat (very non-PC!), Wally in his chauffeur’s uniform, and the other, unnamed, goon are going out I think not just for a stroll in the park. They have some “business” to attend to, I believe. As for Shiyaki/Kato, he can start the packing for the return to Central City, using that as a cover for going through Topper’s “stuff” for any useful information. He just has to be careful, not too eager to contact the Green Hornet when he could be overheard by returning gangsters or recorded by some hidden listening device (though that would seem to be out of Topper’s range)….
I believe this story will be over by June 23, because Sunday June 24th Mike said there will be a special guest star. I’m betting it will be a dream with The Lone Ranger.

So, are these ‘the boys’ that weren’t around when Topper needed them at Green Hornet’s arrival?

And what will Shiyaki be doing? Recording devices? Hidden cameras? searching every nook and cranny for hidden doors etc. would be the best bet.

Topper really looks evil in that 2nd panel

“The boys will be with me. Don’t worry about it.” Famous last words.

Yes Topper, I am going alone. The two thugs with their hats and jackets on walking in front of me are just my imaginary friends.

Seems like Topper found the price of working in Tracy’s town too high.

Could Tracy have been mistaken about Topper going after the banks?
