Oh, Liz, Everyone loves babies â they are new and adorable. We all outgrow that and become people. I look at my boysâs childhood pictures and my heart melted at their adorable young faces filled with innocence. I look at my adult sons and ask myself, âAre these the same innocent and adorable little boys I raised?â It is sometimes hard to believe they are the one and same. Sigh.
We leave Elly thinking, âWhy does my daughter think I donât like her? I let her watch TV. I stopped talking about how she broke the milk and how she cursed and drew that picture of me as a witch and how she soaked me when she washed the windows when they were open and how she hurt Farleyâs paw and how she was fighting in the street with Michael and the Enjo kids. Weâve had nothing but good times this past year.â
I was talking to my son the other day while he was holding his five-month-old son. My son was saying how easy it is for he and his wife to get their son to laugh with them, and be cute, and all that. My son then said that, âIn 10 â 12 years, he (the baby) is going to think we are idiots.â So says the one who did exactly that!
Babies are cute and lovable, but a ton of work, so they need to be âinstinctivelyâ liked. As you get older, you get much more interesting, and are just as lovable! Being a royal pain again as a teenager is natures way of getting the parents to let go, at least a little. If everything doesnât go straight south as the child and parent begin to let go, you will still be lovable as an adult, and one day if the parents are lucky, a grown-up person will turn around, looking a touch puzzled, and say,âWho are you, really? Youâre my parent and I love you, but you are also someone I need to get to know as an adult. I donât know the adult.â

A better question would be, âDo you still like me as much now?â

Babies are cute, most of them grow out of that rather quickly.
