Michael you have stated the #1 reason most people seem to not understand/care what is happening in politics.

Wait, there are other amendments to the constitution? The news cycle would have us believe that there’s only the second. (And soon to be the fifth!)

The Constitution is not a written document even though the idea is stored on a written document — thousands of documents.
What it really is, is an agreement among people as to how they would govern themselves, the allowed limitations and disallowed limitations, the expansions of rights and other limitations. And the country is filled with people who don’t care or intend to comply, who mock the limitations or pretend the words have other meanings or new knowledge or evolving standards have changed it.
