I love Marcie’s expression in the last panel.

Says something about this woman that no other friends or relatives have come to visit her. And that her daughter ran off.

I feel sorry for that woman. On the other hand, it is true that you feel close to the nurses when you stay for a long time in a hospital. They become the other family, the one accompanying you during the ordeal while the rest of your family, as lovely as they are, have another life outside.

A friend’s ex told his mother’s nurses that if they kept her alive til the first of the new year, they would each get $10k. She didn’t make it and it cost him over a million in extra estate taxes.

We took care of my Mom for the last two years of her life; she had throat cancer and everyone else had given up on her. We hired LVNs, who became part of our family. When Mom passed we gave the lead nurse her rampvan plus ten K, the second nurse (who would sing lullabies to Mom) another 10K and the young man 5K. Mom had lots of money, which made this possible. But we still miss those nurses. When she went down for the last time the two lady nurses held a vigil in the hospital, even gave her a sponge bath. We miss them still.

The President does it, why not Marcie.
