I haven’t had a problem asking for “personal” items.
Unless you’re in an auto parts store asking for feminine hygiene products, it’s a pretty good bet that the employees have touched them during stock days.
In the early 1970s, condoms were still kept behind the counter with the pharmacist, and you had to ASK for them. I worked for a pharmacist—behind the counter—-and waited on many a embarrassed and stammering young man.
Most stores now have an app that tells you where items are located. You just tell it which store you’re in & the type in the item. Some even tell you if it is stock. A lot easier than trying to find an employee less embarrassing if it’s a “personal” item.

Try finding someone if you need help, though.

And then the employee gets on the store loudspeaker to ask for a stock check or such for the embarassing item in aisle X.

With all the raunchy commercials on t.v. I didn’t know we had anything left to be embarrassed about.

They also neglect to put the price in the computer. When you are at the checkout, they have to call for a price check over the intercom.
