This problem is not entirely the fault of the manufacturers, nor are the politicians to be taken to task for not fixing it. It is up to US, we the people, to settle and decide we will recycle. When I was a kid, all of the grocery stores had stacks of boxes piled in the front, ready for Dad to grab and pack the groceries; Aldi’s still does this. If you forgot to bring a bag from home, use a box or carry your groceries in your arms; next time, you’ll remember.
In many places in Europe, you are only allowed a certain amount of trash each week, based on the size of your family, and by the same token, you are expected to put out a certain amount of recycling. There is absolutely no reason American can’t do the same. We used to be an innovator; now we can hardly follow.

In Denmark, I’ve seen a couple of huge (10-15 feet tall) “fish” sculptures built out of plastic waste, and they look just like that.
