Why was late May chosen as Decoration Day [the original name for Memorial Day]? Because by late May every state of the Union would have flowers blooming to be placed on the graves of fallen soldiers. It should be noted that until 1919 the North and the South held Decoration Day on different dates. Still fighting the Civil War socially and politically. After WW1 when a universal draft took men from the entire nation for the war effort, a unified date was formally established. After the Korean conflict it became Memorial Day…
I agree; focus! We need to remember those who died for our freedom and the freedom of others. We need to take care of the ones who returned. Especially those who didn’t give their lives, just parts of their bodies/minds!!!
A favorite (but never positively sourced) quote: People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.
Regardless of where you live or what you do with your life, you have a chance to improve it or change it because of the sacrifices of warriors who stood to when the call came.
Gratitude and prayers. flags and parades are a small repayment for their efforts. Less than that is gross ingratitude.
So, WHY are we still sacrificing our young men in Afghanistan? Should’nt they be able to fight their own war by now? We are told they die in defense of our country but are we really likely to be invaded by Taliban or ISIS? This war has cost us thousands of American soldier lives, billions of dollars, and has no end in sight. Obama told us he’d end the war. Mr. Trump please step up and get us out of Viet- Ghanistan
Better if we had no wars and hence no need for soldiers. But that would require a very different world from the one we live in, and in the U.S. today we honor those who died to defend the best aspects of the world we have or to improve it.
Neither party is guilt free when it comes to making decisions that place US troops in foreign lands. Neither are they able to keep their hands off the controls of those same situations; a policy which not only assures that no real resolution will realized, but also that the numbers of kia and wounded will increase. And considering that a majority of the current DC crop have never been within miles of actual combat, they, therefore, have no clue about the actual cost of their decisions.

Since Memorial Day commemorates the Civil War, if no soldiers had died, we might still have slavery.

I’d give up even more if it meant no more students had to die in schools.

Even if wars were to end, we would still need Memorial Day to honor those who have already died.
