Brings to mind the problem that arose over ‘Surfin’ USA.’ The single credited the song to Brian Wilson- but anyone who had not just come out of isolation knew that it was Chuck Berry’s “Sweet Little Sixteen” with new words. When it appeared on the LP of the same name, the credit was changed to Berry’s name. It was one things for folk-singers to put their name on new arrangements of old public domain songs. Smacking your name on the song of a living, active songwriter was not cool. Perhaps it wasn’t Brian’s error, but the rcord company? Don’t know.
