You don’t want heat stroke. That’s been killing a lot of people this summer. I am glad that Michael is smart enough to ignore his air-conditioned mother and take of himself.
I like the “lawns” plural. You can see a little bit of Lynn “I own two houses next to each other” Johnston has snuck into the dialogue.
Obviously, he should not be cutting grass at noon. He should do it early morning (but not too early to disturb neighbors) or late in the day when the temp is cooling. The folks south of the border have the right idea…a siesta during the noon-day hours!
When you live where it nears 120 degrees in the summer, listening to folks complain about how hot 85 is can be very amusing. Shoot, we keep the INSIDE of our house at about 80 in the summertime.
I live in Ohio, and I have never heard anyone refer to their yard as plural. When we mowed the yard or lawn, we mowed all of it – front, back, and sides as one yard. I decided last year that I have always hated mowing, and I’m getting too old to do, so I pay someone to do it for me. I am much happier now.
Michael is looking for an excuse not to do the work. First, he should wear a hat and sunscreen and take water out there with him. If he feels odd, take a break in the shade. My dad used to work outside construction in Palm Springs in the summer; mom packed his thermos with ice cubes. He did his work, no complaints.
Take some water outside, wet down your shirt, and if necessary put a wet rag on your head. Hey, back in Mike’s age bracket I was not only mowing the lawns, but Dad wanted the front done checkerboard (one direction, then perpendicular), and in the back the steepest third of the hill had grass so I got to (carefully) mow that, too. (Another third was a rock garden for which I moved the rocks and did much of the pond maintenance, then cinder block and slate stairs that I helped set in, and the shallower third was terraced into three layers. One guess who moved the cinder blocks… Now, I DID get what I considered reasonable pay for it and I did get to avoid doing the weeding by doing the mowing.

nice excuse, Michael, but building up at sweat also builds — as Calvin’s father would also say — character

A local high school boy died during football practice this summer. I didn’t know him, but still – what a way to go! Be careful out there, folks!

Take as many water breaks as you need, Mike! Just don’t use them as an excuse not to finish the lawns.

She probably should have told him to mow for 15 minutes first, THEN take a good water break.
