There was a similar strip with Sally releasing her balloon. But she wasn’t as lucky as Linus. “Ok, balloon. When I release you, you’ll come right back to my hand. Ok, balloon? Balloon?”
This is like the third strip in about a week (two of them Peanuts) featuring a red balloon, and the first two times, I made a reference to Stephen King’s It. I’ll take a pass this time, I suppose.
I’m reminded of a strip where Charlie Brown warned Sally that her beach ball was rolling on the water to the other side of the lake. She told him to stay calm, then shouted to the beach ball that it had better come back or it would regret it for the rest of its life. It returned obediently, and Sally told her big brother, “Sometimes you just have to know how to talk to a beach ball.”
Maybe it’s just a matter of knowing how to relate to the world around us.

It’s like they always say Lucy: “You play with fire, then your asking for a permanent burn!”

I agree with Lucy right there. That sure was impossible.

Wouldn’t shock me if the balloon came back just to spite Lucy.

Could Schulz have been inspired by the short film “Le Ballon rouge” from 1957?

Balloons are not like dogs in training.

It’s all in how you talk to them. Linus is obviously a Balloon Whisperer.

The first panel is the rope that Charlie Brown tied to Lucy’s balloon back in the 50’s!

Don’t tie your balloons up outside; let them in the house.

To be fair, I would have said the same thing if my little brother had let his balloon get “some exercise”.
