And the biggest problem is that Hannigan seems to be very nice young man!

Learn from this, Clayton, and never try petty on yourself. It won’t look any better on you.

Adam should wear the mantel of his angst and put on his petty coat.

I don’t suppose it’s ever occurred to Our Hero to go work on his own lawn, has it?

Mr. Hannigan seems to be Adam’s Flanders/Dinkleberg.

Some recent research on people belittling do-gooders may apply here. It seems that resenting and belittling the successful (by whatever measure) happens across cultures, but is far more common in more competitive environments. In other words, Mr. Hannigan is only irritating because Adam feels that he “ought to” compete, so the other guy must be trying to make him look bad.

I never understood the reason why people have to have perfect lawns. All the chemicals, pesticides and insecticides that are use to get a green, lush yard are not good for the environment and when there is a drought, they waste water to keep them from turning brown. Why not use the time and energy to raise fruits and vegetables that can be eaten?

They will have to in the near future and it would be a good idea if everyone would do so.
