From what I was told, my step-nieces/nephews who are old enough for school (one to 12th grade, one to 10th grade, one to 2nd grade, and three to either preschool or kindergarten), they start the week after next.
That all depends upon the state/community. Here in Michigan we used to start school depending upon local school systems from Mid-August to the Thursday following Labor Day. The state tourist industry convinced the Legislature that early school starts were causing major economic losses and a law was passed forcing all Public Schools (and possibly charters, since they also get some state support) to start after Labor Day and not before.
I grew up on a farm in a small rural community. After working in the fields all summer, I was always anxious to go back to school. The kids who lived in town were the ones who dreaded the start of school.
I lived in NY up until 4 years ago. School ALWAYS began after Labor Day. I suspect the vacation industry was a factor as well as the fact that our schools did not have a/c, so…never would begin in the August dog-days. Now in Florida, the kids are going back now! This week and next. We are not even at the half-way mark in August. (But yeah, their schools have a/c).
It’s different here in Ecuador, on the coast. My grandkids’ summer vacation is late Feb. through April. They begin school around the 1st of May.
But the kids who live in the sierras in places like Quito and Cuenca have a school year similar to the States. Their “summer” vacation is really a winter one, since the seasons are reversed in South America. They’re out June until the end of August and begin going back in a couple of weeks.
This means, nationally, we have two Back to School Sales campaigns !
