I have a walnut tree and there are squirrels around. They like the walnuts so I thought I would get some walnut meat for myself.Using all my power tools and all my hand tools I got to the meatin about 20 minutes. And it didn’t taste too good. Dumb squirrelsdid it in about 20 SECONDS! Go figger.
That answers an old question. They are black walnuts, cracked only with a hammer followed by laborious picking. Squirrels have no problem with English varieties, which can be opened with bare hands and leave the two shell halves intact for the classic shell game or to glue back together with a message inside.
My dad used to collect a huge set of books from Time-Life, on all kinds of subjects. One was on behavior, and a section showed an experiment using a squirrel who had been raised completely without access to any kind of nut. He was given a batch of hazelnuts, and it took him multiple tries to discover the most efficient way to gnaw the shell and quickly crack it open.

It’s a hard shell case to solve. Which is nuttier, the walnuts or the squirrels?

It looks like the first two squirrels are playing William Tell.
