Is it possible that there were wolves involved at the heart of the butchering? Or is it possible that the pig who says that Portia saved her from the wolf is part of the butcher shop?
Is that the pig who was acting as a lawyer for the wolves at the beginning of this story? It makes sense that she would be a part of the plot, after what Mavis had said. The lawyer would have helped make the wolves seem like victims…and here she is doing it again. If it is her.
Interesting. Jacob found out Portia was the next target of the Inner Circle. So Velda is going to use Portia as bait but did not know she moved. Now here is Denise…..partially undressed blaming this wolf as the butcher and saying Portia showed up and saved her from the butcher. Last time we saw Denise she was all about how badly the wolves are being treated. Now she accuses one of being a murderer. How did Portia know where to go to “save” Denise? This don’t add up……..except for one thing. Denise is the butcher. It’s so easy to blame the wolf and be believed. Who would suspect another pig as being the butcher. Denise is not what she seems.
This wolf appears to be the same one from the very beginning of the arc when Portia first met Walt (1/4/17). He called Denise to help him get out of jail (1/18/17). Denise also prosecuted Heather Hoss (9/29/17). The wolf also appears to be the same character who received the call to send Portia her mail package (6/29/18).
I figured she would turn up again before all this was sorted out. Me thinks she doth protest way too much. We know Portia was the intended breakfast (er victim) and having a wolf here is waaaaay too convenient. She poured gasoline on the whole wolf issue with Heather’s trial to focus attention on the wolves, now she’s doing it again. She may not be the butcher (though she should certainly be a suspect) but she’s at the very least running interference for him/her.
Remember that Walt may have spoken to Portia just prior to this scene. He may know the truth of the situation. Which may mean there’s going to be a really surprised Denise…
And the fireman wasn’t carrying a blanket when he went in, so Denise may be hiding something under the blanket, like a bloody butcher’s apron. But why?
Panel 4. She’s got lawyer eyes and as others have said; she’s shifting the blame to get attention off her. She’s deeply involved somehow. Could be she’s a cannibal too, eating her own kind. Too bad Portia didn’t have 2 shots in her zip gun.
Denise is part of it, no doubt. Somebody had to transport Portia and a wolf carrying an unconcious pig would have stood out like a broken thumb. Also, someone called the wolf for the knockout package…
It was said on the phone that they were keeping on the down low and because of this the pig killers would have nobody on the butcher slab right now except Portia. The second point is the new pig i guess her name is Denise dosen’t seem to be showing the signs of a beaten victim who decided to end her life by the butcher hand but a complete victim who was taken unaware.
Wasn’t the Inner Circle using the wolves as scapegoats for the pig-disappearances? And here we have a wolf who has been administering the drugs to pigs that were harassed into killing themselves.
And here is “Denise”, a pig who has been risking her reputation defending the wolves, even going so far as prosecuting Heather Hoss for murdering Lou Pine. Come to think of it, this drug wolf was Lou Pine’s buddy. He helped Lou harass Portia during her jog. And he testified at Heather’s trial.
The wolf may indeed be the Butcher, but he was not working alone. Someone called him to get some more drugs ready for Portia. It may have been “Denise”, and now that the jig is up, she’s using her pig status to save herself from prosecution.
After all, why would a pig want to eat another pig, right?
How about this, related to some guess I made before. If this wolf is the one that answered the phone order to send the parcel of sleep juice to Portia (nice catch on that, y’all. I hadn’t seen that)—then it makes real sense that if Portia was aware of how the killers worked; then she would know who sends the parcels. If Portia knew that she was safe from being a target (and all of what we saw her experiencing was either faked, or we saw it wrong) then she would see that parcel as a betrayal. And…she might then go after the person she knew sent the parcel to her (and therefore set her up as a target)—and shoot him.
If Denise was a ‘victim’, shouldn’t she be groggy, almost unconscious? As another mentioned, she’s pointing attention away from her and focusing it on the wolf.Perhaps Denise defending the wolves was how she stayed “Off the Menu”.
So two pigs show up in this location—neither as a victim. Portia went there with a gun. Denise was there, but as some commenters have pointed out, she’s not groggy or terrified. Somebody stabbed Portia. Did Denise do it, intending to blame the wolf? At some point the butchers must have realized that the “scratch” call was not made by one of their own. Maybe because Portia would have never been a target.

Getting to be a question of who believes who. Or whom.

Or Portia found the wolf harassing the second pig, and stepped into it, shooting the wolf and then being stabbed.
The wolf might be the butcher and the other pig just a female pig in the wrong place at the wrong time.
The fact that the wolf identified Portia as the pig who shot him is interesting. That would seem to argue that he knew her.

Panel two….that silhouette of Walt between the wolf and the Doc. I think it’s going to get ugly next page.

I’m probably wrong but that is a heck of a short muzzle for a wolf.

I’m not seeing the wolf as the villain here. Something about his whole demeanor? And Denise is just a nasty piece of work.

Put pigs under stress, and they’ll kill and eat other pigs. Some pigs will kill and eat other pigs “just because”.
