I love Honey Nut Cheerios for dinner when I’m alone. They are best when eaten while standing up at the sink.

I wanted a cereal that had no sugar in it. It was like finding the Holy Grail! Finally found that grape nuts is not sugar with a little cereal grain added.

I haven’t seen a breakfast cereal commercial on TV in a long time. I must be watching the wrong shows. But I do remember the ones for Chocolate Covered Sugar Bombs where at the end they would say “Part of this complete breakfast.” I wonder how many kids would eat the bacon and eggs and orange juice and toast and come to think of it all those things without the cereal is a complete breakfast.

I guess I was a weird kid. I never ate, nor did I like, sugary cereals. I was the only kid I know who LIKED and sought out All Bran, just because I liked the taste. I did not need it as a laxative, but oh…did I get a surprise the first time I ate it. LOL!

Having ‘breakfast’ for dinnier is done here sometimes to keep things fresh. I usually will make pancakes and sausage, although my omelettes are also requested.

On our first trip to Florida some 27 years ago as we shopped at Publix I told the boys, aged 7 and 12 to go down the extensive cereal aisle but they had to find a cereal that was at least a bit good for them. Took them 30 minutes and came back with ‘Wheat Cheks’. I felt sorry for them and said get whatever you want. They grabbed Total.

I discovered what our Honorable Ancestors already knew, that you don’t need to add sweetener to oatmeal, in fact it’s better if you use it to thicken a thin soup into a thick stew. From oatmeal I branched out and discovered several ways to make pearl barley better than rice. The simplest one is to simmer it in your leftover pickle brine, but there are other ways, such as using bouillon, broth, or stock. Simmered bulgur wheat can replace rice (though my stomach won’t tolerate it) and many Ukrainians also like buckwheat simmered gently with butter, onions, mushrooms—and I like to add canned corn.
