I’m glad I’m not the only one who thought Mrs. Godfrey was being quite unreasonable here. Nate explained her twice (before he raised his voice) why it looked as if he was raising his hand, and she just kept ignoring it.

The True Reason: Mrs. Godfrey probably thinks that Nate is making up an unreasonable alibi, and she’s not buying it. Also, she might be at a distance that she couldn’t see that he was clearly scratching his head.
