While understood to convey concern, that is rather a silly question. (Why were you awake?) Because I wasn’t asleep seems to be a perfectly fine answer to me under those circumstances. A better question might be, ‘Worried about something, or just couldn’t sleep?’.
Most of the time when I can’t sleep it is because of worry of some sort, usually work related
Occasionally when I know I have a big day at work I’ll catch myself waking up early as if I have an exciting day ahead, makes me wonder what is wrong with my head
