I believe it was Robert Heinlein who observed that art was anything composed to provoke a response from the auditor. I have to say that most abstract art succeeds admirably in my case; my response is always along the lines of the infallibly effective, “I don’t get it.” When an artist or a critic implies that the fault is mine, that I just don’t understand, my response is a bit more pointed. You’re right, I agree, I don’t understand – but isn’t it your job to use symbols or images that I could understand? Otherwise, it’s not art, it’s intellectual goofing off! I find having an artist having to explain his work is rather like a comedian having to explain his punchline.

Opal Pickles… trying to become the next Jackson Pollock.

I really don’t think Opal would do that on her living room carpet. Now Roscoe has no problem with that.

She should have gotten Nelson to help her splatter paint, he would love it

Now it’s art. People will read many different meanings into those footprints.
