On the reuse of bottles, we used to do that in the USA with soft drink bottles. We would have to put up a deposit on the bottle and would get the deposit back when we brought the bottles in. Then the soft drink company decided it was too much effort for them and they created disposable containers of which wound up in the landfills creating more waste.
However, the Germans have to shuttle bottles around a nation the size of what, Pennsylvania? In the US, the weight savings in fuel for plastic over glass bottles is HUGE. Pick up a case of empty plastic bottles vs a case of empty glass bottles of the same capacity and see.
That said, I miss the old glass bottles. The soda tasted MUCH better out of glass than is does out of plastic or cans (and when they used cane sugar vs corn syrup), and as a child, a good deal of my spending money was earned collecting bottles for the deposit. Collect them, put them in the basket of my bicycle then pedal them to the grocery for the deposit. Kept me thin as a rail, too, all that pedaling and lifting.
A bid to save vaquitas last year did not go well: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/animalia/wp/2017/11/09/a-final-bid-to-save-the-worlds-rarest-porpoise-ends-in-heartbreak-is-extinction-next/?utm_term=.b2d60be57f39
Agreed, cleaning bottles was difficult. Also, mice sometimes got caught in the empties! And, if that one in a billion was missed by the inspector, a disastrous lawsuit!
In Alberta, we pay a deposit on all beer, soda, milk, juice, water, and meal replacement bottles. We return them to a “bottle depot” to get the refund.

um… how long ago was Apollo 16? Duke and his wife must be long gone and their kids must be grandparents by now, right?

Germany is currently experiencing heat wave that has increased beer sales and contributed to a bottle shortage.
Because the bottles are heavier, some with proprietary designs, or special stoppers, they’re expensive to produce…
not worth reordering new for every bottle sold.
Some people wait till they have full cases to return…. others have started collecting the different designs, or finding other uses for them.
I read that some breweries have even posted signs or run ads saying bring back our bottles or no more beer!

Yay Germany! And New England too! In Pennsylvania they won’t even accept glass bottles in recycling anymore. Such leadership!

People are a trashy species! Imagine leaving all that crud on the moon or having such an ego as to launch your car into space!

If aliens ever landed on the moon, they would definitely question some of the stuff left on there.

You can always recycle the plastic and aluminum as well as glass!

Why not? We recycle beer, from water to water.

How do they know if they’ve reached 30? Do they notch them after each use or something?
Stephen Gilberg about 6 years ago
An estimated 12? So few and they’re not sure of the exact number known to exist?
Bonus trivia: “Vaquita” means “little cow” in Spanish.

That was done with beer bottles also. WAAAAAAAAAAY back when.

At the other end of the scale: “Orcas, or killer whales, are the largest of the dolphins and one of the world’s most powerful predators”.
