Ahh! Those were the days! Lying in bed all day, cutting out paper dolls, reading comics, listening to soap operas. And getting a visit from the pediatrician! There were advantages to being a sick kid….Now you have to suck it up and get on with your day.
My mother had a clever trick. She would put raisins in a glass of ginger ale. I got fascinated watching as the raisins slowly gathered air bubbles and floated to the top where the bubbles burst and they fell to the bottom again. Sort of like a lava lamp before the lava lamp was popular. And no, I did not eat the raisins. The purpose here was entertainment.

That would be nice if there wasn’t that whole matter of feeling rotten to contend with.

When I was a boy, my mother used to say that I enjoyed comics so much that I’d be happy in prison so long as I was allowed to read comics there.

Now that Calvin seems to be feeling better, I wonder how long before those two start a rumble over the comic books.

This struck me as strange. I was never offered tea at that age, and I’ve never had an urge to drink it since.

Tea helps settle the GI tract or so I’ve been told.

Tea? Whenever we were that sick, the only thing we could keep down was 7up. Water, tea, and milk would come right back up.

Tea and toast. That was just about all I wanted. The only times I ever lose my appetite. . . but when it comes back, look out!

I’ve always, even as a kid, that children will enjoy the benefits of schooling (like reading) but don’t want to get anymore of them.
