I do Great Dane rescue. The subject of the above comic is quite common. Bloodhound and Mastiff rescue have the same problem. How can anyone take on a Great Dane puppy and not know it will get big? People amaze me, and not in a good way.
The other common problem is that people give up dogs because they’re too rambunctious or destructive, after giving the dog NO training. Doesn’t work with children, either, but they’re more difficult to give up.
Jdunham You are so right! Many people do not research the breed and then end up with a dog that is not a good fit for the family. Each breed, and group, have different temperaments and requirements, and if people are not educated or prepared first, it is the dog that ultimately suffers.
Folks think Instagram videos or YouTube and “I have to have that! It’s Sooo Cute!” and then when it is inconvenient – get rid of it.
It would be interesting if folks were required to go through training (not just the puppy, but the humans, too!) to understand that they need consistency like children. Once something is allowed (like jumping up – when they are puppies, it is cute – but when they are adults, not so much) the dog figures it is always allowed.
So far we have one puppy we found on the street and one older we got from the newspaper that needed rehoming (his owner had a stroke). Then just recently a puppy who was also in online needed rehoming (too active, people weren’t home, etc) and we have him. He is active, he is a little nuts and needs training – but we have 5 acres and we are home. He is doing okay and our dogs are training him (lol) and so are we.
people spend more time researching their next car that they’ll have for a few years, or the vacation that they be on for a week, rather than the pet they could have sleeping on the bed for a decade! Please people, get educated before you chose a pet, be it from a shelter or a breeder!
You are singing my song! Hopefully shelters are doing a good job of screening people for idiocy, but it does not always work.I have seen it happen with border collie pups too. ( and mixes) Adorable puppy gets bigger and gets returned because “ it bites the kids”. No, your puppy is herding the kids! it’s a Border collie! No training, and no interest in training because “ don’t have time”. End of rant.

Great Danes are great companions, although I prefer German Shepherds as far as dogs go although I am really more of a cat person. While I would like to have a dog, one of my current rescues was almost killed by a pit bull attack (I blame the idiot owners, not the dog) so she is terrified of anything canine. If I come home smelling of dog, she runs and hides.
My husband, a Licensed Veterinary Technician worked at 2 animal shelters. The cage cards would read “had baby couldn’t keep”, “got too big”, “barks too much”, “husband/wife doesn’t like pets.” Lame excuses from lame brain humans!! :’{
